Knox County GIS

A new technology that has been publicized recently has finally come alive in the county. The Geographical Information System (GIS) that has been in the works for the past two to three years is up and running.

GIS is a computer based information system that links geographical features such as roads, streams, houses, trees or bridges to a database containing specific information about each feature. (An electronic atlas.)

When building a GIS, information is compiled and added to the system as a theme. A theme is a group of information that is related such as roads. A theme is added to the system by physically drawing with a computer, the features of a theme onto a base map. A base map is usually a set of digital aerial photographs of the area you are interested in. As each feature in a theme is drawn onto the base map, the computer records specific information about that feature and stores it in a database file that can be manipulated and queried or questioned to receive answers specific to your interests.

An example of how GIS is being used locally is in the Knox Soil and Water Conservation District and Natural Resources Conservation Service, where technicians utilize the new technology to write Comprehensive Nutrient Manage Plans and Conservation plans for area producers of livestock and crops.

Agriculture and Natural Resources management will benefit greatly from this new technology.

If you would like to get a first hand look at it, please feel free to make an appointment at the Knox SWCD at 1025 Harcourt Rd. in Mt. Vernon.
