The Enviroscape model is available for classroom demonstrations for
grades K-12. It is used as an education tool to demonstrate how everyday
activities can result in Non-Point Source Water Pollution (NPS). Non-Point
Source pollution refers to pollution which does not come from one single
identifiable source, however it includes runoff from lawns, streets, farms and
other surfaces. With the model students are able to see and discuss the
cause/effect of daily activities within the watershed.
The model is designed for grades K-6, however high school students can benefit
from the presentation as well. The model involves a hands-on approach for
students.

Recently, the District purchased a new
Enviroscape Model which highlights "Drinking Water Source and
Wastewater Treatment." This model shows where drinking water (residential
and commercial, rural and urban) comes from and how it is delivered to us.
The model also demonstrates wastewater treatment which shows what happens to
water and waste after we use it. Students can trace the path of water
delivery to and from destinations. Presently staff are in the process of
being trained to use this model, however future presentations can be scheduled
through by
calling 740-393-6724.
The groundwater model is also
available for classroom presentations. This interactive model demonstrates
how water flows through the ground and how different land uses may affect the
quality and quality of groundwater. This model
allows upper elementary students through adults to visualize the out-of-sight
underground portion of the water (hydrologic) cycle. The model includes all
materials needed and a user's guide explaining how to demonstrate and discuss 28
different concepts. Concepts include recharging groundwater by precipitation and
discharging into rivers where water is contained, and how it moves in soil and
rock, and how human activities may affect groundwater. Instructions on how to
use the model, background information on groundwater and a glossary are also
provided in the guide. To schedule a classroom presentation, please contact the Knox SWCD at 393-6724.
